Muegge Lab Mission

Our multidisciplinary team is dedicated to generating high quality research that advances human health in metabolic and intestinal diseases. We focus on understanding how cellular diversity is established in the intestinal epithelium in health and disease. Our ultimate goal is to develop new therapies that restore and enhance beneficial epithelial cells in patients suffering from intestinal injury or metabolic disease. We are committed to training scientists of all backgrounds to perform rigorous, ethical, and impactful research, and preparing them for career success in their field of interest.

Mentoring Philosophy

#MentorFirst Logo

My greatest responsibility as a PI is to train the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists and to empower them to take the next step on their career journeys. Scientific training is a springboard to many different career paths, and I will actively support you in whatever career path fits your goals. Training in the Muegge Lab emphasizes transferable skills in experimental design, data analysis, communication, and critical thinking that are foundational to many possible careers.

I have taken the #MentorFirst Pledge, because I believe that the best scientific research will only happen when all the members of our team feel supported and have the mentoring and advice they need to be successful.

I pledge to

  • Cultivate an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued
  • Frequently praise and recognize good work, use constructive and helpful feedback to describe areas for growth
  • Prioritize professional development, including presentation and scientific writing skills
  • Give my lab members ample amounts of my time, both around the lab and through regular one-on-one meetings
  • Communicate, set expectations, and be transparent
  • Promote self-care and well-being
  • Be a Mentoring Role Model available to you for the rest of your career

Commitment to Diversity

In the Muegge Lab, we believe that the best scientific research is carried out by diverse teams, looking at the world in new ways and asking new questions. We value the diverse experiences and expertise of our team members, including those of different races, religions, ages, national origins, disabilities, gender identities, or sexual orientation. In our pursuit of knowledge, we encourage an attitude of collaboration, trust, and openness to new experiences and opinions. We feel that these principles of diversity and inclusion empower our scientific success by opening us to new ways of thinking and innovation.
